Why is it essential to implement video protection in your hotels?

Video protection strengthens guest trust and your teams’ peace of mind, and serves two main purposes:

Ensuring the safety and peace of mind of your guests and employees

Video surveillance is essential for the day-to-day security of a hotel. Discreet yet visible cameras, positioned in the right places and with full respect for privacy, reassure your guests and deter theft, damage and incidents.

Gain peace of mind and legal protection

Video protection allows you to supervise your site in real time and review recordings when an incident occurs. It is a valuable tool for analysing events, improving procedures and providing evidence in the event of a dispute or an insurance claim.

Where should cameras be installed?

Installing cameras involves both strategic and legal considerations. UTH will help you define a coverage plan that is complete and extensive enough to cover key areas with optimised angles. These include:

  • The main entrance and other access points to the building;
  • The lobby and front desk;
  • Access to lifts, staircases and service stairs;
  • Corridors on guest floors;
  • Possibly: the restaurant, the pool (especially if there is no lifeguard), the car park and storage areas.

It is also possible to rationalise the equipment required in order to keep costs under control and avoid overloading the system unnecessarily. Finally, legal restrictions must be strictly respected, particularly regarding the recording of public spaces or semi-private areas, which must comply with applicable regulations (such as staff break rooms, spas, etc.).

What types of cameras should be installed?

There are many hardware options, but we generally recommend mini-dome cameras, which meet the technical requirements for high-definition video streams while remaining discreet yet visible. Offering good value for money, they can be installed indoors or outdoors and, depending on the model, feature infrared for improved night vision. Pan-tilt or remotely controlled cameras can be added where needed.

It is important to look beyond the cameras themselves and consider the system as a whole: cabling, network, and dedicated servers for recording and accessing footage. Thanks to its IT expertise, UTH can advise you on the optimal infrastructure for your needs. We also provide ongoing maintenance, both hardware and software.

Regulations and video surveillance in hotels

As establishments open to the public, hotels are subject to specific regulations. In particular, any installation requires prefectural authorisation, as well as the display of specific information notices for users.

In addition, cameras must not film certain areas. Access to footage must be restricted to management or authorised security personnel only, and recordings may not be kept for more than 30 days. In all cases, UTH supports you in ensuring full compliance with current legislation.
